Formation Flight Practice Test

The main idea is that a formation approach uses a stack to keep the flight in stable, well-ordered spacing while you transition to the landing. Moving into the stack position out of the weather and no later than about a half mile from the runway gives you a clean, visually workable environment and enough distance to align, configure, and slot into the final approach behind the lead without crowding the airspace or rushing maneuvers. Being out of the weather reduces gusts, turbulence, and reduced visibility that can make precise formation control difficult, while the half-mile boundary keeps the group close enough to maintain proper spacing and timing for the transition to the final approach. If you wait until you’ve passed the final approach fix or reach the runway, you risk losing the required spacing and reaction time to enter the final approach cleanly. ATC direction isn’t the trigger for moving to stack in this standard procedure; the lead’s plan and your position relative to the runway determine when you relocate.
